Sub-Committee,

It is suggested that the 'Sub-Committee

should meet at 4.00 p.m. on Wednesday the 29th. instant in the

Council Chamber to discuss what steps can best be taken to en-

-courage young men in the Colony to join the Volunteers. Will

Members please intimate if that day and hour will suit them.

If not what other day and hour will be convenient.

The Establishment at present consists of

4

432 and the total strength 220.

(a). Artillery:- 2 5* Howitzers.

2 2.95* Mountain Guns.

(c). Engineer Company:-

(d). Mounted Troop:-

Establishment...... 48: Strength...... 13.

All the mon except the Mounted Troop and Engineers are trained

to use Maxim Guns of which the Forps has 12, but there is no

Maxim Gun Company..

What the Military Authorities are most

urgently in need of is additional Infantry.

Major Hart-Synnot has suggested that the

Volunteers could render very valuable assistance by forming an

ammunition column to feed the Mobile Artillery of the Garrison.

He adds "this is an honourable service and would be very useful

to us. It would not matter if the numbers were large for spare men could be used as ammunition numbers (1.e. to bring up shell,

to the guns in action) to the guns in the field”.

He has also suggested that a Corps of

Scouts and Guides would be very useful. He says that the know**

-ledge the members of the Mounted Troop gained of the topography

of the Calony rendered that Corps very valuable.
